Dr. Lora Alkhawam

Emergency physician at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. She earned her undergraduate and doctoral degrees at Northwestern University and completed her residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the McGaw Medical Center. Her clinical interests include pediatric readiness in emergency care. Outside of medicine, she is an avid tennis player and enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons.

Kamna Balhara, MD, MA

Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins and Director of the Johns Hopkins Program in Arts, Humanities, and Health. She holds a joint appointment in the Program in Medicine, Science, and the Humanities at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Balhara is committed to the integration of the health humanities across the continuum of emergency medicine education; she co-leads the Health Humanities at Hopkins EM initiative and directs the EM Health Humanities fellowship.

Jay Baruch, MD

Jay Baruch, MD, is a writer, educator, clinician, and a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he directs the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Scholarly Concentration. His books include Tornado of Life: A Doctor’s Journey through Constraints and Creativity in the ER (MIT Press, 2022) and two award-winning short fiction collections. His short fiction and essays have appeared in medical and literary journals and lay media outlets.

Abra Fant, MD, MS

Residency Program Director for Emergency Medicine at Northwestern University and Director for Patient Safety and Quality Improvement at McGaw Medical Center. She earned her Master of Science in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement at Northwestern and her medical doctorate at Rush University, then completed her emergency medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia-Cornell. She is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Healthcare Administration, Leadership, and Management.

Matthew R. Klein, MD, MPH

Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Tufts University School of Medicine. His academic interests include career advising, curriculum design, and narrative writing.

Danielle M. McCarthy, MD

Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She studies doctor-patient communication in the emergency department, including risk, diagnostic uncertainty, and opioid use, and designs interventions to improve patients’ understanding of their care in this high-risk setting.

IV Mirus, MD, MPH

Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern and Vice Chair of Ethics at Parkland Health. A child of Deaf adults (CODA) and former healthcare ASL interpreter, he brings a perspective on language, communication, and the lived experience of care to Ethos EM. His scholarship and advocacy focus on ethics, language access, and Deaf health equity.

Lauren K. Stewart, MD

Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Indiana University, where she has been a faculty member since 2018. Her research focuses on the role of metabolic syndrome in venous thromboembolism.
